Line manager behaviour and employee stress

Funded by the HSE, CIPD and IIP, this research set out to explore the link between line manager behaviour and the prevention and reduction of stress in those being managed. Over three phases, the research has developed a behavioural framework showing the management competencies identified as being important in this context, together with a questionnaire to measure whether a particular manager shows the relevant behaviours, and interventions to support managers in developing/showing the competencies.

The outputs so far from the research are available as follows:

  • Short guidance leaflets, produced for HR practitioners and line managers: these give a summary of the research findings and implications for implementation and can be downloaded from the CIPD website
  • The full research reports can be downloaded from HSE and CIPD websites
  • A self-report version of the questionnaire can be found at: http://www.hse.gov.uk/stress/mcit.htm.
  • We also re-analysed the research data to look specifically at the behaviours relevant to managing conflict. The results of this analysis have formed the basis of a CIPD guide on the manager's role in managing conflict

We are currently working on the following:

  • Two packages of on-line learning materials based on the research: one package aims to support line managers directly; and the other package aims to support consultants/trainers/practitioners who provide management development and support to managers. A prototype of these materials will be available through the HSE website for a 2010 launch.
  • Case studies looking at how a selection of employer organisations are implementing the 'management competencies' research in practice - how they integrate the research findings with their HR, management development, well-being and stress management procedures etc.
